Fahrenheit

Fahrenheit 451
(directed by Francois Truffaut) (1966) (Image DVD)--An
English language film from the famed French director which
is based upon a Ray Bradbury novel, this science fiction
fable posits a totalitarian future in which the mission of
firemen, rather than to put out fires, is to destroy and
burn books. Montag is a fireman who slowly develops an
interest in the forbidden books, an interest which parallels
his growing awareness of the oppressiveness of his time's
government and his frustration with the government supplied
pill deadened mind of his wife (played by Julie Christie).
Montag is soon reading books secretly and seeing another
woman (also played by Julie Christie) whose obvious
intellectual freedom is at odds with the mission of the
firemen. Before long Montag is found out, and he must flee
from civilization to join the book people, persons who have
memorized a book to save it from destruction and whose
identity becomes that book. Perhaps in deliberate contrast
to the firemen's actions, the film is cool in tone, but is
of significant interest in its dedication to the sacredness
of books and its deft and elegant style.
